Press release Don't mess with these stripeys! 21 February 2005
The officials for Paul Thompson's testimonial game on Wednesday 9 March have been announced.
All of them are familiar with the sound of a referee's whistle. Taking the armbands for the evening will be Andre Payette, who has just broken the record for individual penalty minutes in a season.
Currently on over 350 minutes, Payette has received numerous game penalties for standing up for his colleagues as he has helped Blaze climb to the top of the Elite League.
But on match night, he will be passing call on their actions as this year's team takes on a Thommo All-Star side.
And he is looking forward to getting some revenge on the Elite League coaches, all of whom will be playing joining Paul Thompson and a number of former Blaze legends.
"I think I've been a referee once before in some tournament, but this should be great fun.
"I've never seen Thommo play, but one thing is for sure – he'll be paying a trip to the penalty box."
In case Payette gets out of order during the match, which is part of a number of activities celebrating Paul Thompson's ten years with the organisation, he will be brought into check by his linesmen.
Kurt Irvine holds the club record for the number of penalty minutes, having accumulated over 1600 penalty minutes between 1996 and 2003.
Irvine has taken on many enforcers over the years despite being smaller than most of them, and is responsible for Thommo's funniest memory in hockey when he scored a diving header goal.
"Thommo gave me that chance in my career. I was a bit wild but he channelled that and gave me the chance that others wouldn't give me."
The other stripey will be Stephen Doyle, who as a netminder in Solihull picked up an extraordinary number of penalty minutes, game penalties and match bans.
"I think I've calmed down a bit since then. I haven't skated for three years so assuming that I will be able to stay upright it should be a great evening. I'm really looking forward to coming back."

A fight/scuffle between Andre and Kurt would be excellent, i'd pay to get in - just to see that lol! Should be an excellent night. It will be good to see Thommo icing, wonder if he's any good

Hey John, makesure you have the prediction league running for this game.
My prediction is a 15-15 draw with Thommo himself scoring the equalising goal.

If anyone correctly predicts the score in a testimonial they deserve 20 points

Does anyone know if Lehman will be in goal or will it be Shea, coz if it's Shea I will definitely go, I am a big fan and I feel sorry for him! Not that there's anything wrong with Jody of course... Also I think you should play Sally!!!

See my post above for the question about "The leagues greatest eveeeerrr goalie", in fact I have a feeling that he was an outskater in some other testimonial but can't quite recall. Was it in Frenchies?

Also I think you should play Sally!!! Remember that Shea is a young lad, and getting to train 3-4 times a week with Elite Quality players is going to improve him, if he's getting ice time or not. No need to feel sorry for him, remember he's getting a lot out of it as well. We'll probably have him for another season before he gets offered a starting role at ENPL/ENL level....

I'm sure I've read somewhere that Dan Shea said he would love to spend another year with Blaze before looking for a starting position

55 is back for one night only - (03/03/2005)
Legend defenceman Stephen Cooper will be dusting off his kit for the first time in three years when he appears at Coventry Blaze coach Paul Thompson's testimonial game next week.
Cooper hung up his skates in Coventry after a 20 year career, during which he established himself as the best British defenceman of all time.
His number 55 shirt was retired by Blaze as a tribute to his contribution to the sport in 2002.
Cooper last set foot on the ice in Blaze's final game of the 2001-2 season, the play-off final defeat to Dundee.
He returns to the Skydome on 9 March as part of Thompson's All-Star side, which will be taking on the current Blaze team to mark his ten years as coach with the organisation.
Other famous names from the Blaze past will also be returning, including Barry Hollyhead, AJ Kelham, Steve Carpenter, Ron Shudra, Lee Richardson, Adam Radmall, Michael Knights, Gareth Owen and Mathias Soderstrom.
The Newcastle Vipers contingent of Hilton Ruggles, Michael Tasker and Shaun Johnson, and last year's player of the year Steve O'Brien, must wait to see whether their clubs will be involved in play-off games that night before confirming.
Also joining Thompson's team will be all the Elite League coaches and his assistant Luc Chabot.
All the players will wear special souvenir shirts, which will be auctioned off afterwards.
Cooper said he was looking forward to paying tribute to Thompson, a coach he highly rates. He said: "I haven't had my kit out of the loft since that game in Dundee, so tonight will be the first time I have worn it in three years!
"I'm looking forward to coming back to Coventry. I was very appreciative that they retired my shirt. It was a classy gesture and I raise my hat to them and to Thommo."
Thompson said: "Having a player like Stephen Cooper coming along to play is great - he'll be as out of shape as me! Seriously though, Coops is one of the best British players that this rink has ever seen, and it will be great for everyone to see him again."
