August 2 1990
Backed by a generation of American money following their war with Iran, Saddam Hussein sends his Iraqi forces across the border to invade Kuwait
For many this was the first time they had heard of Saddam as an enemy of the western world as he was previously seen as the lesser of two evils in comparison to the regimes of Ayotollah Khomenhai & The Shah
Repercussions of this act of agression are continuing to be felt today.
Was this strike one in what has come to be known as the War On Terror?
Possibly because as a result UN forces were based in Saudi Arabia to prepare for Kuwaits liberation. An act which gave Osama Bin Laden his excuse for 9/11 and subsequent terror attacks

August 4 1914
Germany invades Belgium kick starting Britains entry into WWI as a result of a pact with the Belgians
Many who enthusiastically signed up for this war were convinced that it would be all over by Christmas at the latest. Little did they know that they would end up in the most grotesque of conflicts which would change the shape of the world forever. The United States came out of this war as a global superpower as the big European states spent so much on the conflict. Russia got rid of its long standing monarchy to usher in the beginnings of communism which would lead to the long cold war when the Soviet Union went head to head with the USA and sent the world to the brink of nuclear war on many occasions
