soz if this seems like a pathetic question, but one has to learn somehow.
In this case I am talking about for the whole of the rest of the match (like in football.)
And if such a rule exists is it against the player or against the team? (i.e. are subs allowed to replace the player sent off.)

If a player earns himself a 'game misconduct' which is the equivelent of a red card in football, he goes for an early shower. They are still allowed to play 5 players 'after' a player has sat out the time the referee gave the player - For e.g (2+10+Game) would mean the player is sent off and another team member must sit out the penalty minutes - 12 minutes in the example i gave. Also in some cases they issue match bans, depending on how bad the incident is - meaning they don't get to play the upcoming game or two or three or however many they decide on.
Hope that makes sense

Thanks. Is this against the player or the team, and can a team sub a player that has been sent off?

Yes a player can be sent off for the whole game. Either a game or a match penalty. Both of these would carry a 5 min penalty that the team would have to serve, so you would play 4 on 5 for the whole 5 mins no matter how many goals you conceeded, but then you go back to 5 on 5. So the team is only penalised for a 5 min duration, but the player for the game.
There are 2 exceptions to this though, 1st is that if a player receives two 10 min misconducts then that results in a game penalty for the player, but no penalty against the team. 2nd is if 2 players had a 2nd fight and both were assessed game penalties they would be classed as coincidental and neither penalty would show on the clock.

Thanks for explaining. I've thanked you on my website, where I have tried to explain various rules of the game. (If you say your real names I'll credit you as its only right to do so.)

Got me thinking. How can a player get a game penalty yet still contribute to later events in the same match

I'd forgotten that other example too. Although technically overtime was decalared to be a third game the way they marked it. Can't remember whether it was Matulik or Romaniuk but didn't they get the series winning goal to book that memorable final?

It was Matulik, I believe-who had been thrown out of the game (i.e a game penalty) but then returned for overtime on a highly, highly dubious ruling that OT was a separate game. Perhaps one to use should Andre be thrown out...

Both Romanuick and Matulik were in the Penalty box on pretty big penalties going into OT but the Ref stated that OT was a different game thus their penalties were wiped out.
I then believe the goal was Matulik Assisted by Romanuick ;D
In the Elite League that rule does not apply
