PRESS RELEASE FROM THE COVENTRY BLAZE
COVENTRY KID THE LATEST TO SIGN
29 July 2004
The voice of the 'High and Mighty' Coventry Blaze next season will be local
radio presenter John Dalziel.
John, born and bred in Coventry, steps up to the microphone as the new
matchnight announcer.
The Mercia FM presenter has become an ice hockey addict after sampling his
first game last year, and now fills the gap left by Grant Charman, who has
stepped down after seven years in the role.
John, aged 22, is a former Ernesford Grange school pupil and grew up in the
Stoke Aldermoor area of the city. He has enjoyed a meteoric rise among the
city's broadcasters and presents drivetime, Monday to Friday between 2pm and
7pm on Mercia FM, one of the sponsors of the Coventry Blaze.
He will take to his new role at the first game of the season, a challenge
game against Milton Keynes Lightning on September 1, and is planning a
fun-packed family night out for visitors to the Blaze this year.
John said: "When I first heard there was an ice hockey team in the city it
didn't really excite me because I didn't know much about the sport, but from
the moment I went to my first game I was addicted. I found it very easy to
get into and I've got to know quite a few of the players.
"It's very much a family night out. There are a lot more families there than
at other sports and that's where I'll be aiming the presentation. I've got a
few ideas and I'll be working on them with the club as we prepare for the
new season.
"I'm excited about taking over but I'm also very nervous because Grant did a
great job and he knew the game through and through, while I'm quite new to
it. I've got to be more than a fan, I've got to serve the management, the
club and the crowd and I'm looking forward to the challenge."
Blaze Chairman Andy Buxton is equally pleased that John will be taking up
the challenge. He said: "The role of game announcer is so important to the
whole Blaze matchnight experience which is why we are absolutely delighted
that John will be working with us next season. He's a local lad, has a
fantastic personality and already loves the club and the sport. I don't
think we could have anyone better in the role. It will take John a few games
to fully settle in but I think we can all look forward to some terrific
nights at the Skydome with John at the mic."
