Well it's official. From www.coventryblaze.co.uk"Coventry Blaze Head Coach, Paul Thompson has today confirmed that he has completed the signing of all action Canadian forward, Derek Campbell from the Newcastle Vipers. The twenty-nine year old winger hails from Nepean, Ontario and becomes Thompson’s final import forward signing ahead of the 2009/10 Elite Ice Hockey League season. Campbell will join the returning Adam Calder, Dan Carlson and Danny Stewart along with new signings Greg Chambers and Luke Fulghum, as the team’s six overseas trained forwards. This will be the feisty Campbell’s fourth season in the Elite League, having played for Manchester in 06/07 before spending the last two seasons with the Vipers in Newcastle. He has so far recorded a highly impressive 187 points in 178 games in the UK, just one of the qualities that attracted him to Thompson. Campbell also comes with a track record of being more than willing to stand up for his team mates on the ice and in the last two seasons in Newcastle he has surpassed 200 penalty minutes each campaign. Standing 6’1” tall and weighing in at 205lbs, Campbell is a fierce competitor and brings the experience of spells in the United League, East Coast Hockey League and American Hockey League in North America. “I knew exactly what I wanted for my final import forward slot,” said Thompson. “ I wanted a strong skating winger who could play on the first two lines, who could score us twenty odd goals in the season, who played hard, was fiercely competitive and would have no hesitation in sticking up for his team mates on this ice. “I looked at so many possible players but I kept coming back to Derek. He ticked every box that I was looking for. He can score goals, create opportunities for others, he’s hardworking, gives everything on the ice, will fight anyone when required and he wants to come to a top club that will give him the chance to win. The more I looked at it, the more I realised that he is exactly what I’m looking for and what this team needs. “He’s one of those players that the fans love to hate when he’s playing against us, but who becomes a real fan favourite when he plays for us. He loves playing at the Skydome and he can’t wait to play for the Blaze fans as he knows just how good they are when they get behind a player. I’m really looking forward to him joining us.” “I’m really excited about this opportunity,” added Campbell. “And I can’t wait to play for the team that’s not just the most respected British team in the UK, but the most respected and well known in Europe and North America. “When you have to play against Coventry, you know that they really are one of the teams to beat. The fans are really passionate and they certainly let you know that too if you are an opposition player. They really do give great support to their team. I’m hoping that now that I’m going to be pulling on a Blaze shirt that they will take a liking to me and that they’ll enjoy and appreciate my style of play. Despite being just one of the many opposition players who’ve been on the wrong end of their support in the past, I hope they’ll really welcome me to the club now I am one of their own ! “I enjoyed my two years in Newcastle and the City has been home to me pretty much all year round, but things change in hockey and if you are lucky, really good opportunities come along. Coming to Coventry is one of those really good opportunities and my links with the Vipers are now behind me. I wish them all the best for next season but you can only look forward when playing sport. I’m only looking forward now and I really like what I see.” Blaze supporters will have the chance to meet Derek and welcome him to the club at a special event on Sunday 5th July at Crosby’s Bar at the Skydome Arena from 6pm onwards. This follows on from the hugely successful Meet Peter Hirsch night last month and this Sunday’s Meet Greg Owen evening that takes place this Sunday from 6pm. Thompson has confirmed that the signing of Campbell means that he will not be offering new contracts to Carlyle Lewis, Sylvain Deschatelets or Erik Hjalmarsson." Oh joy

What a fantastic signing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At last we have a Power Forward that is going to stick up for the team. No one will be taking liberties with our boys this year. I can't beleive people don't rate this guy every time he has played us he has caused mayhem!!!!
How many times last year did teams come into our barn and whack our best players and there was none to stick up for them. Carlyle was a fantastic bloke but he did not give anyone a beating all year!!!!! you can bet your butt this guy will.
You so called fans also need to realise that the way he played for Newcastle was on the instruction of that bonehead Wilson, King Thompson will ensure that Campbell only misbehaves when necessary.
I will predict right here right now he will win fans player of the year he will do what we wanted our enforcer to do last year Hit, Score, Fight and cause utter mayhem!!!! you will all be standing on seats cheering him on when Cardiff roll in with Voth!!! and when Belfast bring McMorrow!!!!
Derek you have got my vote mate welcome to the cause!!!!!!
Oh and by the way Blaze fans if you beleive what was written in the cronicle about leaving the vipers do you really think they were his words!
Great signing Thommo!!!!!!!!!!!!

"so called fans"? Just because I don't like a signing means I'm not a fan does it? Every time I saw Campbell play he did nothing but take stupid penalties, cause trouble and look disinterested in the game. He is my least liked player in the entire league and the fact that he will be wearing a Blaze shirt next season does not fill me with joy.

Dont you think he is the most least liked player by the fans because they would all like him playing for their team?
And as for taking stupid penalties if you look at most of the games they came at the end of matches when it would have no effect on the outcome!!!!
The only problem I can see with this signing is how he will develop a relationship with other team members like Stewart as I understand they don't like each other to much on and off the ice!!!
Does anyone know wh the final defenceman will be? I understand were are about to sign Jason Robinson!!!!!! If any signing is not going to fill us with joy surley it will be that one!!!!!!!!

Dont you think he is the most least liked player by the fans because they would all like him playing for their team? Possibly for some, but certainly not for me. And as for taking stupid penalties if you look at most of the games they came at the end of matches when it would have no effect on the outcome!!!! There is not much I hate more than a player who takes needless pentalties towards the end of/after a game. Does anyone know wh the final defenceman will be? I understand were are about to sign Jason Robinson!!!!!! If any signing is not going to fill us with joy surley it will be that one!!!!!!!! Probably the only signing that would be worse than Campbell, hopefully this rumor stays as just a rumor.

It would be nice to have a player who fights a bit more as teh lack of high octane adrenalin rising scuffles have been very thin on the ground in recent years. Lewis and Ndur (And even Belak II) were supposed to be able to do this on a regular basis but always seemed disinterested. Stewart seemed to be the only one willing to fight (ANd inevitably take a beating) which given that he's one of the smaller guys doesn't say much for the team spirit. At least Campbell sounds like the closest to the Payette replacement Blaze fans have longed for. The entertainment is coming back

Campbell isn't a enforcer, he shouldn't be fighting McMorrow or Voth. He is a decent middleweight. He can deffinitely put the points on the board too and he will get the dirty goals. Thommo has gone for team toughness this season.
