In all liklihood Blaze will finish this season empty handed which doesn't happen that often. However does that mean it has been a poor season or does the fact that Blaze have remained in the mix mean that all is not bleak?

I was actually thinking about this earlier on today, if in August our memories of the previous seasons were wiped, what would be fair expectations of fans for a club of Blaze size to have?

Looking at spending power Blaze should finish 4th behind Belfast, Sheffield and Nottingham so yuo could argue this season is about as good as we should expect.
However, Thommo has shown that he can put together the best teasm in the UK, he can recruit outstanding players and we can win trophies.
This is a poor season by Blaze standards.

Why don't you wait until the season is over before you judge how good/bad it's been?
Yes the knockout cup and challenge cup have gone, but the league is still mathematically possible, and the play-offs haven't even started yet.

Yeah but the playoffs aren't really worth winning Steph. Nottingham lowered the tone for the playoffs when they kept winning via shootouts!

True. But winning the play-offs is still better than not winning them, especially when people are judging how well the season went on how many trophies we have.

The league is the only way to judge a season in my view. The PO have been utterly devalued by the "win 3 games and your champs" set up, the Challenge Cup devoid of value due to the ridiculous qualification format that no one under stood and the BKOC has never had any value and it;s only purpose is to fleece more money out of the fans.

The Knock out cup is arguably harder to win than the Play Offs. Only the venue and event keep it from totally losing all its sheen.
As for the league when you are talking about things being mathematically possible it is really grabbing at straws. Devon Loch moments only happen about once every 50 years. Besides it is wholly dependent on the best side in this years league inexplicably losing form completely even against all the little weak sides that don't offer anyone a challenge.
No trophies and some poor player performances don't mark this one to be a vintage Blaze season. Lessons to be learned.

Besides it is wholly dependent on the best side in this years league inexplicably losing form completely even against all the little weak sides that don't offer anyone a challenge. Except that 12 of their remaining 13 games are against teams who have beaten them once or more this season. It's not grabbing at straws. If Blaze do their bit, they can get to within 2 points of the Steelers. 2 points. That's one Steelers regular time loss (probably not likely) or 2 over time losses (something that has already happened 7 times this season) True. Never said anything about how much I value the play-offs. IMO they are a joke really, and should be A LOT harder to win than they are at the moment.

Is this a poor season? In the greater scheme of things probably not but for the standards Thommo and the Blaze have set it ain't brilliant, still better than the Cheverie/Belak G season.

If the Blaze win the PlayOffs I'll class this as a good season.
The playoffs format that you can just win your last three games of the season and you win the playoffs means that the fans don't treat it as important as the league, which it isn't in the sense that it doesn't tell you who was the best team over the season. The playoffs are however the pinnacle of the season and for the North American's the playoffs are huge. Also this season will go down as a great one for the Steelers and they will now think they are the number one team in the UK again, what a way to spoil the season it would be for the Blaze to win the playoffs.

Playoffs are huge! I really hate the way this league sets out the playoffs, i think both quarter finals and semi finals should be over 3 legs, 2 home for the highest positioned in the league then have a one off day on the sunday for the Grand Finals and have a few decent exhibition games before.
I think over the next few weeks hopefully the steelers will drop points and we can catch up and who knows?
But playoffs are the thing we can aim for now, i would love to beat the steelers in the final, that would make up for the league.

I dont buy into this no trophies = poor season stuff. How many people think Aston Villa are having a poor season in the Premiership? Its unlikely they will win anything, but I dont see any of their fans calling for players heads. Some of us Blaze fans seem to have become so hell bent on winning we seem to have forgotten that there are 9 other teams continually improving. I think this season has been more about the opposition getting better, as opposed to the Blaze getting worse. We are quick to play down our own team, why instead cant we applaud those around us for catching up?

This might be a "bad" season in the sense that we may not win any trophies but I personally am finding it a very tense and exciting season... especially the last few weeks since Christmas.
With each match being a "must win" if we are to have any chance of winning the league, each match is also a "must be there" match so that we can cheer the boys on, give them as much encouragement as possible and experience the results as soon as possible, even if we lose. All we ask is that they play as we know they can.
My partner and I are new to ice hockey so we don't remember the "classic" seasons from years back. All we know is that what we see keeps us coming back to the SkyDome time after time and keeps us making the trips to the away matches.
