Sometime in the early 60s America was a racial hot coal. Little Rock was the scene of now considered disgraceful scenes as school children where abused due to their skin colour.
A modest lady known as Rosa Parks made a gutsy move to sit in a "Whites Only" seat on a bus causing uproar from the right wing press around the world...including the Conservative party over here.
Segregation was as prevalent in the Southern States as it was in apartheid South Africa.
In 1968 Olympic sprinter Tommy Smith and two others stood in quiet salute as the American National Anthem was played in Mexico. Their heads bowed with one black gloved hand raised firmly in the air symbolizing their own black power struggle.........when they got back home instead of glory they got disdain.
All of these event took place in relative recent history.
Today January 20th 2009 America takes a step into it's own brave new world. The so called color barrier proved no obstacle back on November 4th when Barack Obama stormed to a landslide taking many college states that were considered staunch Republican. A feat even the charismatic JFK couldn't pull off.
Was it Obama's charisma
Was it just no more Republicans
Was America in need of change
Was America ready for change.
America was ready for change.
Are the rest of the world?
The next 4 years have possibly the most riding on them in any presidential term since JFKs ill fated start in January 1961 that came at the height of the Cold War and the beginning of the conflict that would manifest into Vietnam.
The world looks to America for guidance in these troubled economic times. The conflicts in Afghanistan and the Middle East will need careful handling by the worlds policeman.
We can all hope and pray that Barack Obama ids the real deal.
