Cassidy Coventry Blaze Head Coach, Paul Thompson has today confirmed the four players who will make up his leadership team for the forthcoming bmibaby Elite League campaign.
The new captain will be record breaking forward Adam Calder who is starting his fourth year with the club. Last season, Calder shattered both the club and Elite League scoring records on his way to helping the team to a second consecutive league and cup double.
Jonathan Weaver continues as one of Thompson’s Assistant Captains, a role he took on when he joined the club at the start of last season. Weaver previously captained the Newcastle Vipers and is the current captain of the Great Britain team.
The second Assistant Captain’s role will be split between Canadians, Barrie Moore and Danny Stewart, Moore wearing the letter for home games at the Skydome and Stewart taking on the role for road games.
Thompson is confident that Calder will become a great leader for the team.
“One of the good things about Adam is that he doesn’t say something just for the sake of saying it. When he speaks, people listen. He understands all about the club and the expectations we set ourselves here and leads by example on the ice. He’s very professional both on and off the ice and I know he will be a great captain for this organisation.
“As for Weaver, I never thought for a minute about changing his role as Assistant Captain. He has great experience of being a captain for many years and we’ll continue to be leaning on him for the leadership he brings to the team.
“I’m going to alternate Barrie and Danny as the second Assistant Captain. Barrie brings us great maturity and is one of the most unselfish team players who really helps the players around him.
“Stewy is a different kind of character to the other three. He wears his heart on his sleeve and demonstrates the kind of passion that’s required at this hockey club.
“I decided to go with a four man leadership team because I think it covers all the bases I wanted from a leadership group and I know they will lead this team with great pride during the season.”
New Captain, Calder added: “It’s a real honour to be asked to be captain of such a great organisation and team although with the guys we have in our team, it’s not going to be a particularly tough job. I’m really looking forward to leading the team and I can’t wait to get the season going for real.”
