Contract talks finally concluded as GB star re-signs for Blaze
Cassidy Coventry Blaze have today confirmed that they have completed the signing of Russell Cowley.
Cowley joined the Blaze back in the 2001/02 season and has since gone on to make 349 appearances for the club, scoring 67 goals and 117 assists for a 184 point total. His new contract will see him line up for the Blaze for a seventh season, his only professional season away from the club being in 2006/07 when he iced for the Cardiff Devils.
Last season, in helping Blaze land a league and cup double, Cowley turned in career best figures, breaking through the 50 point mark for the first time in his professional career. He also made eight further appearances for the Great Britain team and has been a permanent fixture in the national side for the last five seasons.
Thompson was pleased to finally get his man.
“Everyone knows that we couldn’t agree terms at the start of the summer but I’m glad to say we banged our heads together and finally got a contract signed for the forthcoming season. I always wanted Russ back in the line up as I think last season, we saw what an injury free Russell Cowley could contribute to the team.
“I’m really pleased with the depth we are going to have in our forward lines this season and over the course of a long season I think it’s really going to pay dividends.
“Russell coming back means that Tommy Watkins is going to start the season back on defence which will give me six solid defencemen to go with the good depth up front. Tommy has done a great job when he’s played there in previous seasons and he’s looking forward to being part of a six man defensive unit.
Twenty four year old Cowley himself is also pleased that the contract discussions have finally been resolved.
“It is great to be back playing for the number one team in the country. There has been a lot of speculation this summer about where I would be playing next season, however my only desire has been to play for Coventry again.
“I have had many talks with Thommo over the summer and I am really glad that we both came to an agreement. It is going to be my seventh season putting on a Blaze shirt, making me the second longest serving player on the team after Tommy Watkins next season - something I am really proud of.
“As soon as I signed my contract, our Chairman Andy Buxton just said to me ‘Welcome home’ - words which certainly speak for themselves. I am really excited to be starting the new season with Coventry again and helping the team to win some more silverware.”
