At about 7.10 last night I was passing the sports complex up at Ryton so decided to pop ones head in the door.
The main room was not yet prepared so had to wait in the little side room.
Elaine was asking regular travellers to draw a players name to present a pressie to said player later in the night. I drew Wade only to be told that the name was already taken by someone not yet there. So I then drew B.T.
Entering the sparsely filled main room I then get chatting to Andrew Barlow who starts talking about next seasons speedway which starts in March.
One by one other guests amble in and take seats inlcuding the back seat crew who enter in their customary way.
After chatting to them for a while I notice that Ali (SUPERmouse) & Jenni (Doggyinthewindow) have sneaked in. I join them to get the updates from Panda world and beyond. Ali has painted her nails a charmingly bright shade of blue.
The room starts to fill up as the bar starts getting a little light hammering. John (Covblaze 16) and his g/f Laura walk in but initially sit down at the front.
Incidentally whilst the whole thing was going on there was a band at the front discussing their set. The lead singer was Jodys fiancee. Sorry but I can't rmember the band name.
Anyway Bev comes round with raffle tickets and I purchase some despite never winning. Callum (Exexcovblaze) enters with his family as does Davey (Bizzle) a short while later. Jason has also entered but wearing a suit that is 8 sizes too big for him and having shorn off his blond locks is unrecognisable until he speaks.
Dannii & Kelly eventually turn up following a text message to say seats are running out.
As the girls sit down Kelly calls Jenni Panda for some reason
this then leads to a new wave of animal nicknames , Ali becomes Camel due to the amount she was drinking (Her earlier plan was to fill the table with empty Smirnoff Ice bottles), I become tiger, Dannii becomes Lion (Doing the sexiest roar you would ever hear) and Kelly declares herself a Snake. Paul Wheeler would later choose Weasel for himself.
Noticing a bunch of players near by I remark that I always get Carlson & Calder mixed up which leads to Kelly pointing at them explaining who is who from about five feet away!!!
Callums dad comes over with a half pint of cider that is going spare and asks if I would drink it. I decline but Dannii grabs it with glee and with consequences that would rebound much later
Ali comes back from the buffet with 5 sausages on c**ktail sticks on her plate and nothing else
I have a small chunk of cold kebab from whichever plate Kelly was grabbing from and do my best Paul Burrell (In Bushtucker trials)impression to swallow it, finally getting it down with the help of Stella (Drink not some person called Stella). By now the b2p mainstays John & Davey come to join us along with Jason who is eventually followed by his young g/f Lizzie and Bella (Beckyxxx)
Paul Wheeler (PW) is then spotted entering the affray and proceeds to get his customary splashing out guiness.
I am then told that I will be presenting to Wade his present as the original one hasn't turned up so do so.
I present 8 bottles of lager and a box of chocolates to Wade or rather I initially present a box of chocolates whilst not relinquishing the alcohol. Wade seems cool at this but his eyes do brighten when I point out that the lager is also for him too.
By now the camera is out and the picture round begins (Someone needs to work out how to use a flash) and I get several good pictures done.
The raffle is announced and I realise that my ticket was only one number away. A slow dawning comes over Ali as the penny drops that she got her tickets next and whoops with joy when it is confirmed that she has won.
Oblivious to this I get dragged up the front with Ali only to be told by Elaine to see Bev at the table right next to our seats
. I whisper to Ali "Get the Whiskey"- a litre bottle of Teachers!! She does although we are told we can't drink it in here.
So we take it back to the table
And Ali takes the top off!!
