PHOENIX FLY THE FLAG
On Saturday 27th of November 2004, there will be yet another landmark for
the Coventry Phoenix Women’s Ice Hockey team, as they play their first match
on foreign soil. The club will be representing Great Britain at “Girls Rock
2004”, a two-day international tournament being held in Tallinn, Estonia.
The Phoenix will be competing with teams from Estonia, Latvia, Finland and
the USA. The tournament is described as a friendship tournament, designed to
create international camaraderie and to showcase women’s hockey. As such the
skill level of the teams will vary enormously; Both the Phoenix and the
hosts Dreamland Queens are barely a year old, whereas Laima from Latvia are
made up of 90% of the Latvian national team.
The event is being well received in Estonia, with television coverage and a
ceremonial puck drop from the Estonian President. The Coventry Phoenix will
be taking pennants kindly donated by the Mayor of Coventry as gifts for the
other teams.
Team manager Anna Walters has been working hard with representatives in
Tallinn to coordinate the trip. “Who would have believed that less than a
year ago the club had only six players. Now we have over 30 women
registered, our first league win, our first trophy, and now we are taking
part in an international competition. It’s a fantastic achievement.”<br>
