How come back when Arthur Fowler was in Eastenders everyone used to support a fictional team called Walford Town? Now all the characters seem to support West Ham. So they have gone from supporting a fictional team to a real team. In Coronation Street it is the opposite. They all used to support Man City except for Martin Platt who was Utd. Now they are always going on about Weatherfield County. Personally I think fictional is better because it means they can have storylines about footballers like in Coronation Street. They certainly don't talk about football enough in soaps, especially as many scenes are set in pubs. It is a well known fact that football is the most talked about subject in your average local pub.

Continuing the football in soaps theme have you noticed that occasionally when a world cup is on they (EastEnders is the worst for this) do a totally pc storyline that has a loose connection to the game. Like when they did the 5 a side tournament and had the good guy (Mark Fowler) as England and the bad guy (Phil Mitchell) as Germany. And don't get me started about the rubbish they did for France 1998 Other main events like General Elections are rarely talked about either. Nor are modern phenomonems like reality tv. All of which would be topics of conversation in any pub as opposed to just gossip about their neighbours.
Any way Walford Town went into bankruptcy many years ago when once promising player Aiden (Sean Maguire) got injured and brought a succesful lawsuit against the club using rookie lawyer Maya Sharmar. The playing equipment was brought by Farsley rugby league club on the recommendation of ex player now blond cradle snatcher Terry Woods who had set up home in Emmerdale with his then cockney wife Brit. Brit it turned out was a former main shareholder of Walford Town but pulled out her investment just prior to the court case to attempt to buy a pub with her husband called the Woolpack. The Walford name lived on briefly through a group on disenchanted fans who tried to do an "AFC Wimbledon" and start up afresh as Walford Wanderers under the guise of a sympathetic local. Unfortunately the would be coach was not the most tactically minded and a coup developed prior to their first game and a new coach took over who had a lot of experience from watching the television. The newly named Real Walford won their first (And only) match mainly through distractions caused by the sister of half of the team and an irish Wolfhound that belonged to the coach. Half of the team (and their sister) were then forced out of the team and area by the local group of Ultras. The team would have played many more fixtures but for some reason the letters they sent to the coach asking for match reports and future arrangements were never returned.
Truth is sometimes stranger than friction ;D
Does that answer your question Rich?

Oh well long live Walford Town Football Club. Who the hell are West Ham Utd? Aren't West Ham that team that are about 10 times better than that team from up the road that wears sky blue?!

Thats a close guess I suppose but thinking about it I always thought they were the team that lost 2-1 away from home early in the 2004-05 season against a team that play in Sky Blue. I'v heard that team who play in Sky Blue are prety good. Not only can they beat the Hammers but they could also give Real Walford a good hiding. Just don't let any of their fans into the Queen Vic after/before the game though. We all know the rules. No football talk in there.

if cov were even half decent they would have finished above mid-table in the championship, but seeing as they aren't, more relegation battles next year anyone?!

if anyone is gonna help Coventry become a force in that league, it'll be Micky Adams. The thing is though i can't see just his reputation being the factor behind City signing any decent players. They are not a glamorous club and will struggle to buy anyone that is worthy of challenging for a place in the Premiership.

I think they need to go down first and re-group before they can make a challenge to get higher in the standings

Personally I can't see City getting promoted or even making the playoffs next season. However I think we will do better than what we did this season. I can see it being similar to the Eric Black season when we failed to mount a serious playoff challange due to the team being so inconsistant but they did give the fans some good performances and some memorable moments. As for Micky Adams, well I think he knows the situation unlike Peter Reid seemed to. I think he knows that you don't challange for promotion from the Championship by trying to sign superstars and failing. A team in Coventry's position need to be going for lesser players that can do a job. Glad to see Adebola has been offered a new contract and Trevor Benjiman too because although he didn't really shine this season he I think he could turn out to be a useful player.
