Coventry City 2-1 Aston Villa November 1999 This game was probably the best City performance (deffinatly the most entertaining) I have ever witnessed along with when we beat Arsenal 3-2 in the same season. I was sitting in the East End JSB Area and the stadium was packed even though the game was on Sky. City were class from begginning to end, with our midfield of McAllister, Hadji, Chipo and Palmer and are front two of Keane and Rousell. Cedric Rousell put us a head when he headed home Keane's cross. Then Robbie Keane hit the cross bar with a long range lob. Villa equalised when Dion Dublin got the goal we all knew he would and it was 1-1 at half-time. Second half though City were even better and in the 60 something minute Robbie Keane finnished brilliantly from close range to give us the lead. All I remember about the game after that was the whole stadium singing "Sacked In The Morning" to John Gregory plus that other song that always gets sung when we play against Villa. Oh yeah and the result put us above them in the Premiership table and it was also the night when Sky Sports nicknamed us "The Entertainers".
Also have to mention a guy who was sat near me that night. He had a beard that was that long it was a safety hazzard.

Coventry City 3-0 Derby County 2002 This game wern't that memorable but we won, it was on Sky and there was a fantastic goal scored by the player manager. Forget Rooney's volley last Sunday, Gary McAllister's against Derby was one to remember. Craig Hignett scored a cracking goal from outside the area too, and Bothroyd's wasn't to bad either. I was sat in the West Terrace and the atomosphere was great and it was the first City game I had been to in a while so I enjoyed it even more than I would have usually because I was looking forward to it all week. Great day.

Although not a Sky Blues fan I did want to be there for this historic match. But will have to make up for it by getting into the rugby for free and seeing Thommo and co parading the trifecta of silverware ;D
Will attempt to purchase a program on my way into town tomorrow and have this vision that Derby will win by one goal scored in the last 10 minutes by Mo Konjic who will not celebrate the goal

Apparently Mo Konjic has landed himself into a bit of trouble by saying on Derby Radio that he hopes the game is a draw as he is a Derby player now but he couldn't bare to see his club Coventry City get relegated.

Another double post by me but who cares? I was going to wait until somebody else had posted before I posted about yesterdays game but I just sent a proper long e-mail to my City supporting mates who unfortunatly couldn't make the game yesterday as they are in Manchester, India or Iraq. Can't be asked typing it all out again so thought I would copy and paste the e-mail. Was going to post about when we beat West Brom 1-0 with Johnie Jackson scoring in the last minute but yesterday was a lot more memorable.
The City of Coventry had gone football mad over the passed few weeks with the end of an era and all that. Everywhere you went you would hear people talking about their memories of Highfield Road and all that. Well yesterday City gave us one more great memory.
Needing a win to be sure of our Championship safety, Highfield Road was obviously a complete sellout with 14,000 (1000 from Coventry) who couldn't get tickets for the game travelling up to Derby to watch the game on a big screen at Pride Park. We had a few drinks in the Devonshire Arms which was packed with City supporters before the game before walking to Highfield Road. We arrived at about 1:30pm where the place is usually dead. However not on this occasion, it was a carnival atomopsphere outside and inside the ground people were singing in the bar. Outside fans were singing. There was a sea of Sky Blue all around the stadium and this was even before the players had came out for the warm up. They had the band on the pitch playing and that was followed by a parade of City legends including Steve Ogrizovic, Brian Borrows, Bobby Gould, Tommy Hutchinson, the man voted by City fans as the clubs greatest player of all-time and of course the guest of honour at the game Jimmy Hill. He was asked to lead the City fans in singing his legendary Sky Blue Song. He did as well and the whole stadium joined in (even the main stand).
Kickoff time approached and the teams ran out onto the Highfield Road pitch to start one more game. The atomoshere in Highfield Road was electric. Micky Adams had said in the telegraph earlia in the week that Derby would have to come at us and it looked very much like that was how City were playing and it was working when City went on the counter attack, McSheffrey skipped round a couple of players before putting City 1-0 up. Not long later it was 2-0 when Mo Konjic who had recieved a massive ovation off the City fans tripped Claus Jorgenson in the penalty area and the Cov kid Gary McSheffrey coolley placed home his second goal of the afternoon from the penalty spot. Half the main stand had got a maxican wave going but unfortunatly the other half of the main stand didn't seem to be following suit. Dele Adebola made it 3-0 City with a fantastic individual effort before Stern John poked home from a corner to make it 4-0. All of a sudden after various attempts from all over the stadium to get the Mexican Wave started it all clicked and it was flying round the whole stadium. Words can not describe how beautiful it looked. Half-time and City were 4-0 up. Safety was near enough assured. George Burley must have been shell shocked. Who knows what he said to his players at half-time. Still needing points to assure a playoff spot Derby got one back thanks to a good long range effort by I don't know who. Who cares? Not wanting the last ever goal at Highfield Road to be scored by a Derby player (who wasn't Mo Konjic) City fans were delighted when Stern John got his second and City's fifth of the afternoon. Derby got another one back before super sub Andy Whing came on and scored with his first touch. It was a cracker too and a fantastic celebration when the ginger ninja sort of pretended to fly passed the West Terrace. Chants of "Stand Up If You Love City" and "The Sky Blue Song" could be heard all over Highfield Road. On the final whistle fans invaded the pitch despite warnings not too. Most left the pitch when told to other than a load of chavs (very few in City shirts) who were subjected to plenty of abuse from the City fans. The players came back onto the pitch for a lap of honour and then (once the referee had gone) it was time for the true City fans to invade the pitch. It was amazing. More fans were on the pitch than there were in the stands. Fans who couldn't get tickets for the game had sneaked in once the gates were opened to see Highfield Road one more time. Jimmy Hill and John Sillett were stood in the main stand and again led the Sky Blue Song before Micky Adams made an emotional speach about how many people at the club had not known what to expect but he did because of the time he spent at Coventry City as a player. Must say about Micky Adams, when he walked passed the West Terrace he reminded me of Michael Tasker. For those of you who don't know who he is, he is an ice hockey player formally of the Coventry Blaze. After every game he used to salute the fans and he always had this look in his eye like he was full of passion and enthusiasm. He always looked as if he wanted even more success.
It was all over but finnally Coventry City fans have something to be optimistic about. Moving to a new stadium, a decent manager and a half decent team. If only the fans got behind Coventry City like they did yesterday every week. We would be unstoppable.
EDIT - Cheers Hurricane for saving me the embarassment of double posting. You are a true superhero.

Sounds like the atmosphere was top notch. In a way it was good that the last match was a win and the last goal by a Coventry player at the West end side. Managed to get a couple of programmes for my friend and I at £6 a pop were fantastic when you consider how poor the regular ones are for half the price. As I couldn't get into the last match there I would like to be part of the new history and go to the first games at the new place (Friendly and league) An era has ended and a new beginning has started.

I hope we have a big friendly to open the new arena and not just a game against a team that has just won promotion to the Premiership. I heard a while ago that Freddie Shepherd offered to bring Newcastle down but Mike McGinnity said he wanted a bigger club. Knowing him he probably mean't a local pub side and big as in the size of the players bellies. We'll have to wait and see though. City should have had a friendly to close Highfield Road then we would have had two sellouts. I always pictured the last ever game at Highfield Road being against Real Madrid or AC Milan with Gordon Strachan blasting a last minute penalty into the stands. Yesterday was good enough for me though

If only the fans got behind Coventry City like they did yesterday every week. We would be unstoppable. You know thats not going to happen though (unless Coventry are near the top of the league next season.) Yes the first game at the new arena will probably be a sell out, but its the continued long term ability of the crowds to come in, that Coventry cannot seem to get unless they are doing well. As an example of what I mean you've only had 3 attendances of over 20,000 this season. One was yesterday, for which most fans would go to. And yes Coventry have played at Highfield Road for 106 years. However in time the arena will get a lot of history. I wonder what people will say about it in the year 2111. As for the first game of next season. I'd love it to be Wolves (as long as we win though.)
