Rodney Marsh has been sacked by Sky Sports for telling this joke live on air.
David Beckham has turned down a move to Newcastle United. Real Madrid and Newcastle had agreed an £8 Million transfer fee for the England captain but Beckham was reported to have said there was no way he could leave Real for Newcastle after what the Toon Army had done to Thailand and surrounding areas.
Personally I think sacking him is very harsh because although he joked about a real tradegy it was David Beckham he was mocking and not the disaster itself. Also I have heard comedians joke about other disasters before and have got away with it. I think he should have just been made to publicly apologise.
What does everybody else think?

Ohhh I always miss these "live on air" mistakes that people make. I'd pay to watch the reactions of the co-presenters. What happened immediately after he told the joke? Quite funny though

Rodney probably meant it as a mocking of David Beckham...but I'm sure all of families of the 200k+ people who have died didn't see it that way!!
Glad he's been sacked anyway...idiot!!
I always thought his analysis was very poor

He's about 3 weeks late with this joke as I used it during the Geordies game with Yeading, albeit not to as many people as Marsh though. He is a humourous guy and has many anecdotes about his time in the game. Not sure he views the modern game as best as others do and probably should have stuck to the after dinner circuit where this gag would have been more accomodated.
On a different note Ron Atkinsons gaffs have also cost him his livelihood but are we as a nation becoming too over sensitive?
