Following on from my post a few weeks back about football in soaps, how come the whole of tonight's episode of Eastenders was based on Alfie and Billly sorting things out with Kat and Little Mo. I mean aint they West Ham fans? Surely they would have been concentrating on the important issues like going to Cardiff to watch the playoff final. I know the Eastenders script was written weeks ago before West Ham even got to Cardiff but surely they could have edited tonights show a bit. I mean it just aint realistic.

Somehow i don't think they could have included the fact that West Ham are in the play off finals, the script wasn't written weeks ago, but months ago, and filmed months ago (they are at LEAST 2 - 2 1/2 months ahead) And for most Easties fans, i think the drama of the Alfie, Kat, Little Mo, Billy thing would be more interesting than Alfie and Billy talking about a football game.

Yeh but how can Alfie and Billy be taken seriously as characters ever again? They are mean't to be West Ham fans and not one mention of the big game.

Yeah, but when this episode was written and filmed, there WAS no big game. How can they mention something that hasn't happened.

Well when the Queen Mother died they edited the show a bit and filmed an extra scene where Dot and Pauline watched the funeral on TV. So it can be done and West Ham playing in the Playoff final would mean a lot more to them than the Queen Mothers funeral.

The Queen Mother's death was a bigger event than a football match.

I know what you're saying Rich and this lack of real world realism is common. Why for instance couldn't there be the odd line about West Hams play off/promotion chances throughout the 9 months of the season. It would have kept it real.
Corrie once did a scene during the Manchester derby where the much lamented Tommy Harris (A Wednesday fan) spoke to Les Battersby (A Blue). Les asked him as a Wednesdayite who he wanted to win and Tommy replied "Anyone but United"- a small piece but well keeping in with reality
Like I pointed out in a previous point, the topic of conversation in most pubs is not what the neighbours are upto

The Queen Mother's death was a bigger event than a football match. Without meaning to sound disrespectful to our Royal Family the Queen Mother was just one individual. West Ham are a football club and how they do means a lot to people in that area of London.

Is the Queen Mother dead then?

Is the Queen Mother dead then? One of the teachers at my old school used to always say that the Queen Mother actually died in 1983 and they just used a robot programmed to put its arm in the air to do her job.
