MAJOR changes are being planned at Elite League ice hockey level for next season.
Cardiff Devils are among the clubs who will be able to sign 15 import players – five more than currently allowed.
That rule change is among the changes being discussed by Elite League directors and coaches, who are to meet tomorrow.
Plans for 2008-2009 include:
15 ITC cards per club.
The Elite League wage caps to rise from £5,700 to £6,000 net per club per week.
Clubs will be able to sign import players from North America or Europe.
The likelihood is that teams will build from a mixture of Canadian and American players along with those from European countries.
The wage cap must be strictly adhered to – and tough penalties, including a potential loss of points, will be imposed on those who break it.
The extra ITC cards could affect the current crucial importance of British players. The best Brits can currently demand big wages.
Clubs can only sign ONE import player from another British team. With 10 clubs that would ensure only 10 players currently with Elite League clubs could move to a rival between seasons.
