From what I have seen here and abroad Hockey seems to be almost a 50/50 split in terms of men/women in the crowd of all age groups too.
This doesnt seem to be the case in a lot of other sports where the crowd is male dominated.
So just what is it that brings so many women to watch the game?
Neal Martin isnt a valid answer. javascript:add(

I wouldn't say its 50-50 at the Blaze, more like 60-40 at home games and probably 70-30 at away games. That is still a lot of female support compared to other sports though. Its probably down to the type of publicity it gets and the reputation it has for being a family sport, i.e lots of families go to games and the average family tends to be a man, a woman and a couple of kids.

I used 50/50 as an example but it is far nearer than other sports especially as a lot of couples go.
Its a good thing though and more women should go but I dont see why it is more popular than other sports amongst the ladies.

i didnt even know we had a ice hockey team to be honest until dave told me about it and took me along to a game... i like it because the anger (sp) is on the ice, not between fans and its the only sport i've ever watched where i don't feel bored senseless
i think families tend to go along as there isn't the fear of fighting among fans there seems to be at football. other sports tend to be boring and the kids start complaining which gets very nasty looks from football fans but not from ice hockey fans.
i can honestly say that i dont watch the team because of neal martin, i have a pavol shirt ;D

So do female hockey fans like the fighting in hockey?
Incidently although I have played other sports i have never been able to watch them, so there is something different about hockey.

I think females do tend to watch a lot more sports these days anyway. If I was being sexist I would blame Micro wave meals ;D but I'm not.
I think a lot is to do with breaking down barriers of what sports watching used to be with it being mainly a masculine escape going back decades.
Of the sports I watch, hockey, football, speedway and rugby there is always a healthy section of each gender

The ISL did a survey when they were still in existance.... The spilt overall back about 5 years ago was 55/45 in favour of Men (at the Superleague clubs anyway), making the closest spilt in terms of people watching any sport in the UK.
I belive the second is Rugby Union.

Sorry but is Superleague Rugby League or was that a name for a Hockey league?

The Super League was the top flight of British Ice Hockey until it folded, and from that a breakaway league was formed which was the Elite League.

Interestingly, in my experience, a lot of the ladies I´ve spoken to know more about hockey than a lot of the men, which kind of puts paid to the whole "women only watch it for the fit men" argument. This is also the case with football...a study has recently shown that more women understand the offside rule than men.
Maybe women just enjoy watching a sport that actually has equal importance given to it in the participation of men and women...granted, women don´t get anywhere near the crowds that men do, but they are still treated as equals and, at amateur (i.e non-paid) level at least are allowed to compete in mixed teams-something which happens in very few other sports.

Id expected some more comments from female fans, but as was pointed out to me the other day the forum is predominantly male.

I don't really know why I like ice hockey. I find it alot more interesting then most other sports. Its faster than alot of other sports (such as football) and alot more seems to happen. And I always think that a player needs alot more skill to play hockey than alot of other sports (anyone can kick a football) Don't really know why else, it's just fun to watch, and gives me something to do on the normally boring Sunday evenings.
