With immediate effect the Mobilx Newcastle Vipers have agreed to release Mel Angelstad from his contract with the club. The 34-year-old utility player requested his release following an opportunity to join the Canadian Fire Service became available.
The Canadian who also iced in Britain last year with the Belfast Giants, had been lured across the Irish Sea during the summer by the enthusiastic management duo of Rob Wilson and Paddy O'Connor. Two seasons ago, Angelstad iced in two games with the NHL's Washington Capitals, having spent the previous six campaigns with teams in the top minor leagues, the AHL and IHL protecting young NHL stars of the future. With the Mobilx Vipers, Angelstad picked up two assists in 13 games and bagged 85 penalty minutes.
Mobilx Vipers player-coach Rob Wilson commented: "Mel approached us and explained that he has the opportunity to join the fire service in Canada and also continue his hockey career with a team not far from where he will be based. To his credit, he did offer to stay with the club and commute when possible. However, after further discussions both parties felt this wasn't feasible and Mel submitted his notice which we duly accepted. We would like to thank Mel for his professionalism and efforts during his time on Tyneside and wish him all the best for the future."
