Personally , i'm a big fan of Penalty shots to decide games, so i'd have 5 minutes 4 on 4, followed by sudden death penalty shots ;D

Same here Penalty Shots are good, but you don't see enough.

If a game did go to penalty shots I wouldn't want it to be sudden death as it would be likley to go down to 1 player whether or not we win or lose, 5 penalty shots each would be better.
I am actually quite happy with how overtime is done at the moment to be honest. Having draws in some games is part of the beauty of ice hockey although it would getting annoying if there were lots of draws so overtime is a good idea having 4 on 4 instead of 5 on 5 so that there is more chance of there being a goal.
It would be well exiting though to see a Blaze Playoff or Challenge Cup game go to penalty shots, providing we won of course.

I'm all for penalty shots to decide a game. I've only seen four occasions of this- 2 involving Blaze (We won both) They do heighten the atmosphere.
I would play devils advocate here and say only do it for regular leaue games for the extra point after overtime as it is a harsh way to lose in a knock out situation as I've seen Bison, Steelers & Flames do. Incidentally the Flames also lost to us in a regular league match this way

I'm a big fan of the penalty shots...
one of the best games (and probably the most exciting) that i've seen was the BNL Cup Semi-Final against the Bison, where we were 3-0 down with 12 minutes to go... and by the end of the 3rd it was 3-3.... then we won on penalty shots.
A sweeter victory I have yet to taste.

Agree 5 Mins then pen shots might as well award the point somehow.

On the subject of overtime losses the last I can recall that we suffered was in the play offs of the 2000-2001 season away at Peterborough. Can anyone recall one more recent than that or are we near enough unbeatable in the fourth period

Personally I prefer the current system. If you can't win it after 5 mins 4 on 4 then a point a side is fair.
the problem with penalty shots is that if a team is confident on penalty shots, or have a goalie who is good in those situations, then they will just shut down the play in OT making a pretty damn ugly period of play, and look to take the point in the penalty shots.
They had it in the ISL for at least 1 season and the points differential increased because of it as teams like sheffield didn't lose many OT games as they shut down the play and then got the extra point through the shoot out.

to be fair, you do need the occasional draw sometimes too!

I'm in favour of the current system. A period of bonus hockey is always welcome, but leave it at that if it's still all square. Penalty shots arn't needed!

If a match were to go to penalty shots both teams would get a point anyway like they do now, however the added bonus would be the extra point in the excitement of a shoot out. Maybe they could be used not in the league table itself but as a means of deciding between teams level on a number of criteria.

We need to take the mental drain on the players into account. If a game goes into OT then penalties, we lose, and the game the following night goes into OT the shots again. Would it affect the confidence of the players who missed the previous night, and blur there judgement in taking another one?

Would it affect the confidence of the players who missed the previous night, and blur there judgement in taking another one? Good point. Is this the excuse for our national football team then. I think in a way that it would be exciting for the fans and would only say yes if the penalty wins were to count as some sort of bonus point system but not used for league positioning until the end. Say for example 3 penalty shoot victories equal 1 point at the end of the season
