The Colorado Avalanche has signed four players to one-year contracts: forwards Darby Hendrickson, Chris Bala and Jeff Ulmer, and defenseman Brett Clark. Per team policy, financial terms were not disclosed.
“Darby Hendrickson, Brett Clark, and Chris Bala are all players familiar to our organization, and we are pleased to add a player of Jeff Ulmer’s speed and ability” said Avalanche Assistant to the General Manager Greg Sherman. “Darby Hendrickson is a NHL veteran who adds depth to our lineup with his gritty and determined style of play, while Brett Clark, Chris Bala, and Jeff Ulmer have all seen success at the AHL level and will have the opportunity to compete for roster positions at Training Camp.
Jeff Ulmer, 27, signed by the Avalanche as an unrestricted free agent, played the 2003-04 season in Europe, splitting time between Cardiff of the EIHL (United Kingdom) and Lukko of the SM-Ligga (Finnish Elite League), posting totals of nine goals and nine assists in nine games with Cardiff and 13 goals and 8 assists with 71 penalty minutes in 34 games with Lukko. Never drafted after four year at the University of North Dakota, the five-foot, eleven-inch, 195-pound native of Wilcox, Saskatchewan performed for the Canadian National Team before signing his first professional contract with the Houston Aeros (IHL) on March 30, 2000. Ulmer was signed as a free agent by the New York Rangers during the summer of 2000 and played in 21 NHL games, scoring three goals. He was later traded to the Ottawa Senators, playing in their minor league system for two seasons before playing in Europe this past year.
