Blaze sign defenceman Forsyth from Hungarian side Alba Volan
Cassidy Coventry Blaze Head Coach, Paul Thompson has today confirmed that he has completed the signing of Canadian defenceman, Blake Forsyth from Hungarian team Alba Volan.
With Jon Coleman’s short term contract expiring , Thompson has moved quickly to secure the services of the highly experienced Forsyth until the end of the season.
The 6’2”, 200lb Winnipeg native had three highly successful seasons with the Idaho Steelheads between 2005 and 2008 during which time he helped the Steelheads to become the East Coach Hockey League Kelly Cup Champions in 2006/07. The following season, he led the team in plus minus ratings before moving to Hungary at the start of the current season.
Twenty-nine year old Forsyth played 42 games for Hungary’s number one team, who play in the high standard Austrian Elite League, before accepting Thompson’s offer to join up with the Blaze for the remainder of the campaign.
Blaze have just received confirmation that his work permit and international transfer have been approved and he will make his debut in front of his new fans on Saturday night when Blaze entertain the Newcastle Vipers at the Skydome at 7pm
Thompson is delighted to have landed Forsyth to help Coventry’s push for trophies in the latter stage of the season.
“I’ve heard nothing but good things about Blake. He’s a real competitor with great experience and leadership qualities and above all, he’s a winner. He likes to win, he wants to win and in landing the Kelly Cup, he’s proved he can win. That’s exactly what we need right now.
“It really is a great time to bring in someone like Blake and I’m sure he’ll be a great fit with our organisation. He can’t wait to get here and play for the Blaze. He is flying in from Hungary tonight and he will go straight into the line up against Newcastle on Saturday.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jon Coleman for his efforts during the last dozen games or so. He fitted in really well and gave his all every time he went out on the ice. We both knew from the outset that he would only likely be with us for a few weeks and I can’t thank him enough for his professionalism, leadership and the qualities that he’s brought the team in those weeks.”
