League MVP signs new two year contract
Cassidy Coventry Blaze Head Coach, Paul Thompson today confirmed that star forward, Adam Calder has signed a new two year contract with the club.
Calder joined the Blaze at the start of the 04/05 season and has since played 251 games for the club, scoring 168 goals and 185 assists for a 353 point total. After helping the Blaze to the Elite League Grand Slam in his first year, he moved for half a season to Vaxjo Lakers in Sweden before returning to the Blaze line up half way through the 05/06 campaign.
In a glittering UK career to date, the free scoring Canadian has been an Elite League first team all star on three occasions, won seven Elite League trophies and last season was voted the bmibaby Elite League Player of the Season.
Calder’s partnership with American Dan Carlson has been the most prolific in league history and last season the pair shattered both league and club scoring records in finishing at the top of the scoring charts. The Blaze have won the Elite League Championship in each of the three seasons where the pair have played together.
Unsurprisingly, Calder attracted interest and offers from a host of top European Clubs, but unlike several of last season’s Elite League stars, has opted to stay in the UK.
With Carlson already having put pen to paper on a new two year contract, Thompson believes he will still have the best striking partnership in the league next season.
“When a player has a season like Adam did last year, you know that he is going to be attracting interest from all over Europe. It’s no secret that several clubs were trying desperately to sign him which has made it a really topsy turvy off season in terms of the is he staying or is he going saga.
“I’m delighted though that the league MVP will once again be wearing the number 25 Blaze jersey and lining up alongside his partner in crime, Dan Carlson. It would have been a huge challenge for me to replace Adam if he’d moved on – particularly when you look at what he brought to the club last season.
“He’s a quiet guy but carries phenomenal presence in the room and on the ice. With Sylvain retiring, Adam is one of the players I’m going to be looking to for leadership and I have no doubt that he’s more than capable of delivering and carrying on where he left off last season.”
