Well certainly an interesting game.
1st period.
Sheffield were definitely the better team looked more dangerous and created the better chances.
Staniforth made what was IMO a weak call on Cowley early for interference, 9/10 most refs would of let it go. Steelers took advantage of the PP to go 1-0 up.
After that it appeared Staniforth was going to call everything, he called Peron for holding stick but waited untill Wade had punched him then called both, but then for the rest of the period he let go all the holding and hooking that was going on by both teams. How he missed 4 or 5 absolutely blatent penalties on the Steelers I don't know. Blaze were becoming aggitated by the lack of calls and then an absolutely blatent high stick on Poirier wasn't called (tried hooking Poirier with stick starting on shoulder / collar bone then it slid up into his face). End of the period and Thommo obviously must have said something to the ref as Blaze had a bench penalty for abuse of official.
Honourable mention must go to the linesman who was absolutely shocking in the 1st period, Blaze were clearly offside on at least 4/5 occasions but he didn't stop play. The worst one being Calder a yard in their zone skating parallel to the blue line when the puck entered the zone. The only reasons we could think he didn't give offside were that Calder was so far in the zone he missed him, or that he thought the blue logo they hadwas a very very wide blue line.
2nd Period
Tait gets a captains attitude penalty after questioning another missed call by Staniforth. This was probably down to him explaining what he thought of the reffing.
Schueller makes a big open ice check (IMO a clean hit but was a fair way away from where we were seated) on Peron who goes down hurt, Cousineau then goes after Schueller and both get a 2 min roughing penalty.
Cristian then scores following a Blaze face off win then 2 players trying to play the puck at same time, leaving christianto shoot, Jody saved the first shot but Christian put in the rebound. Very sloppy play.
McNamara then takes a cross checking penalty (no worse than the others not called by Staniforth) and this really annoys the Blaze players, and Calder strarts mouthing off at the ref telling him what a crap job he's doing, earning himself a 10 min misconduct, then continues to mouth off and gets it upgraded to a game.
Then 59 seconds later it all kicks off. Schlender got rather upset as Christians stick whizzed just past his head. He then drops the loves and goes after Christian, Adams jumps in but is quickly pulled out by Belak and those 2 start grappling. Meanwhile Christian is turtling on the ice with Schlender still hitting him so Andrews comes in, Schlender has a bit of a go at Andrews as well, before Martin pulls Andrews away. Schlender then goes back to Christian and carries on punching whilst the linesman is trying to stop it. Meanwhile Belak appears just to be holding Adams who then lands a couple of punces, Wade then replies with a couple of punches that see Adams go to the ice. How the penalties were called I don't know. Schlenders match I can understand as 2 fights and hitting player when on floor, but why did Adams only get 2+2 and Belak 5+G Also if 3 Steelers players have gotten 2+2 to 2 Blaze players getting penalty how was one not 3rd man in (Andrews?)
Back to the hockey, and Mcnamara scores with a superb slap shot that Platt just about waved at whilst 3on3. Then a howler from Jody as he failed to cover his post as Andersons pass came off Martin and in. Martin was stooa couple of yards to the side of the net and a couple in front, and it went in at the near post. Jody really should have had something there to stop it.
3rd Period
Staniforth is a now a different ref it seems. Starts calling everything he can on the steelers in the last 10 mins and the Blaze powerplay finally turns up. Martin, Carlson, Mcnamara, Tait and Poirier ran riot and created numerous chances on the PP. The 2nd goal came from some good work pulling the Steelers players out of position, then a great pass from Carlson to Mcnamara who had space to skate in and finish. Then another powerplay goal came from good pressure and the puck eventually went in off of Taits skate and the goal was given (couldn't see clearly if he kicked at it or whether it just hit his skate and went in, Staniforth obviously felt there was no kicking motion which is why he gave the goal). Great effort from the players to pull level and they played out the final 3 mins sensibly so as not to give any good chances to the Steelers.
OT
Both teams had a chance before Shudra popped up to score the winner.
Overall happy with a point from the situation of being 3-1 down with 3 players thrown out and already a player down. Was just a shame Sheffield got the winner in OT.
Staniforth should hopefully get repremanded for his performance as it was dire. The league will have to look at the fight as Schlender got a match penalty, and on review it will be interesting to see if any of the calls are changed.
MoM was definitely Mcnamara for us but the whole team did there part when we had the 3 guys chucked out really seemed to fire them up, proper backs against the walls stuff.
