There's always the Olympics to look forward to. ;D
Maybe the World Conker Championships may offer some hope.

I know a shadow rugby team lst on their antipodean tour but I'm sure we are still officially world champions until 2007.
Cricket- we haven't been any good since the early 80s. The recent winter tour was supposed to be a rare series whitewash win for England not what was expected.
Football- "Dodgy ref, Beckhams penalties etc blah blah blah" Apart from one home based world cup win our record is only 1 other WC semi & 2 Euro Champ ones. I never expect us to win as there are always teams with better teamwork and quality than us. If the world cup were the Elite League then England would be the equivalent of Manchester Phoenix- capable of the odd result but not really expected to go all the way.
Tennis- correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Britains only grand slam finalist in the last 25 years born in Canadia
Boxing- depite the accent the greatest champion since Larry Holmes was born in London. And he retired (Thus far) at the top
Formula 1- Though I am a big Schumacher fan I accept that Jensen Button continues to improve
Olympic Games- Lets not get carried away. Our gold medal haulage since 1980 reads as follow;
2000- 11 1996- Big Fat Lonely Zero 1992-5 1988-5 1984-5 1980-5
The games in Sydeney were great but I think we had a lot of guys and gals putting in career bests at the right time. This time round our best hopes lie with Paula Radcliffe
Conkers/Bog Snorkelling etc- Champs we may be but how many other nations actually know these exist!! That said there's probably still more chance they get shown on terrestrial tv than hockey!
(Climbs down off soapbox)

Can I just correct you on something. 1996 we did get 1 gold medal for rowing, Steve Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent, Redgrave won 5 gold medals in 5 olympics hench why he became Sir Steven Redgrave.
1 sport that England did win a few years back was the Football World Cup for gay people (probably not something we should boast about). We beat Germany in the final. We also did well in the Beard World Cup. I saw them both on They Think Its All Over.

I stand corrected on the 1996 solitary gold. How could I forget the rowing!
Yeah I noticed on TTIAO that we do have a lot of obscure world champs but most of them are done the same way as Americas World Series etc meaning that no one else competes!
Anyone think that half of our trouble as a nation is down to the "Build 'em up knock 'em down" antics of our media?

I know i started this but ime all in with om2004blaze on the media thing. I dont understand why the papers build people up then knock them down it seems like a sport to them. Now theres a thing they could have a world championship between themselves to see who is the best at it!

Hmmmm
Cricket was a bit of a shocker in the recent one dayers wernt they!!!
HOWEVER
The past 12 Tests read
P 12 W 8 L 1 D 3
Against:
Bangladesh Away (Pub team in all fairness)
Sri Lanka Away (One of the hardest places to play cricket, even the aussies have lost there)
West Indies Away (A place we have not won a series in over 30 years, decent result me thinks)
New Zealand Home (series to fight for overall supremecy of 3rd place in the test rankings, and done well)
So when saying that the cricket team is not doing well, just remember the recent record the team has had.
And also - where is the captain from, oh yeah Sheffield ;D ;D (PS: He aint an import)

I was hoping against all hope that jenson might do it today but alas that german did it again. After all that legal cheating being done by most of the drivers in saturdays pre qualifying i thought our boy had a chance of pole only to blow it in the final few corners i think he just needs a better team and car to be able to get that little bit extra needed to beat that german once and for all. Next sunday we can try again for a british win in the super bikes at Mallory park with John Reynolds even though he is riding with a broken collar bone. Is there anybody else going to Mallory on sunday?

hang on a minute, all is not lost, as apparently the other day, according to Kerrang 105.2, the World Bog Snorkelling Cycle champion retained his title in Wales for a second year! what makes this even better is the fact that he is a Brit!! WAHEY! lol

Good news we had two british winners in the super bikes at mallory at the weekend in Scott Smart and John Reynolds. Bad news we let a yank win the british open golf in scotland. Its the british round of the motor gp at donnington on sunday,no british winners there it should be an italian but stranger things could happen!

To be fair though, the superbikes that you speak of were the BRITISH Superbikes so realistically we should have had 2 winners in the 2 races, as they do outnumber the foreign riders. Having said that, forgive me if i am wrong but i was led to believe that Scott Smart was Australian(?) or am i just talking rubbish now?

Yes your talking rubbish scott smart comes from maidstone but there were two very good riders from japan who have both won races even though they are out numbered.
Today the brits were no where to be seen in the British motor GP from donnington which was won by Valentino Rossi an italian(wish he was british) but Jenson Button did really well coming from the back end of the grid to finish second in todays german grand prix it cannot be to far away when he wins his first race(cannot wait to post that one).

I know it was a week ago but
Danny Williams
I know he's not a titlist yet but think he will get one of the proper belts (By default in all fairness) before Ainsley Harriott does
