Thise who were at Nottingham this weekend would have heard Elgars masterpiece being player when an English side was in combat. But should this become the norm and therefore should we as English have our own anthem in the same way as Cardiff and Edinburgh have their own national pride played before a match?
So the question is really what is the better to hear at an English rink the English anthem or the British one?

I'm happy for the Brisish one to be played but I think that should cover all British teams, therefore when we play Cardiff only God Save The Queen should be played and not their anthem. If we do continue to play the Welsh anthem when Cardiff visit the Sky Dome then fair enough, but in that case if they allowed to be Welsh we should be allowed to be English and therefore play Land Of Hope And Glory.
A question I'v asked on many occasions but never recevied an answer to is how come we play the Welsh anthem when Cardiff come to the Sky Dome but we never play Flower Of Scotland when Edinburgh, Dundee, Fife etc visit?

I think it is to do with the numbers who travel, but stand to be corrected

It is about time people started singing ours, not just standing there listening.

I sometimes join in quietly to God Save The Queen but I'd feel at bit silly singing it out loud because nobody else does. I always thought it was an unwritten rule that the anthems in hockey were played to reflect on rather than sing, I might be wrong though. Maybe they should stop playing the music for it and just get Blaze fans to sing it.

Does anyone know the full second verse to LOHAG
The first is
Land of hope and glory Mother of the free How shall we extol those Who are born of thee
But I always get muddled with my "Wider" and "Mightier" lines in the second verse

Wider still and wider Shall thy bounds be set God, who made thee mighty Make thee mightier yet...
God, who made thee mighty Make thee mightier yet.

To answer the question, LOHAG is the best, but it's not our anthem GSTQ is. Simple as.

But GSTQ is the British anthem (And indeed covered all Commonwealth states at one point) hoisted upon us when Henry VIII changed this country from Catholicism, LOHAG is traditionally thought of as the English one. Particularly as other British countries have pride in their own it does smack of discrimination that we are not allowed to celebrate being English. We might as well cancel April 23rd if that is the case English and proud

FYI: GSTQ, is the Royal Anthem of all Commenweatlh countries that still have her as their Head of State (i.e Canada).
And while yes, it's thought of as our national anthem, it's not. The term National Song would be more apt, i.e. like the Northern Irish use Danny Boy at the Commenwealth Games.

But with the other 2 British countries proudly wanting their own independent national song why shouldn't we have one of our own. Bearing in mind that the Monarchy is unelected and that the change to the Queen being head of the Chuch of England only occurred around the middle of the last millenium it doesn't say much for the long and glorious history of old Albion really does it. Indeed the idea of the colonial commonwealth itself raises questions about when this nation was amongst the most repressive on the planet plundering native lands and sunjecting the indigenous population to generations of slavery. Hardly worth boasting about really
Why would an aethiest republican sing for God to save the Queen anyway
Also when you take the Welsh and Scottish national songs the flavour of them is definitely one of stirring character- hairs on the back of the neck as they venture into battle. GSTQ is just a dirge that is laughable whereas LOHAG has that same burst of pride as other anthems

The other points would make for a good debate, but are not really relavent to this one
