At the risk of inviting the riot police to the game, should we be allowed to swear at ice hockey matches. (Only asking the question as well before anybody swears at me.) Pun intended.
Must admit I swear at football, but never (during a chant) at an ice hockey match.

I think people just have to use their inititive, look around at who you have sitting around you and also think about whether or not you have a motive to swear. Unfortunatly we do have a small minority of fans (although we're not the only club too) who will take offence to the smallest things. For example if Blaze were playing in a cup final and our fans started singing "We're Going To Win The Cup" during the game, you'd get some people who'd be on other teams forums the following day apologising for our arrogance. Swearing at hockey doesn't really offend me and I probably would have a bit of a swear occasionally if others did but as nobody else does I don't feel the need too. However we do have some fans that need to relax a bit and not be so concerned about offending opposition fans purely by cleanly bigging up our own team.

OK, would people be offended if a player did a bad pass, which led to a goal to the opposition, and say the odd swear word f or s words slipped out from a couple of fans, and a few young children near by heard? (Not saying I've done this, or not done this by the way.)

I wouldn't be offended by that at all. I openly admit that I once swore through frustration when we conceeded a goal. I did this in the game against Dundee Stars in October 2002, when we were 4-1 up and they got it back to 4-4. Luckilly we ended up winning in overtime. This does not make me evil, it just shows I'm passionate about my team. I may also add that even though I used a naughty word that night I wasn't abusive to anyone. I believe thats the only time I'v done this and its something I try not to do but won't feel to guilty about if I do do.

Swear while playing, never (or rarely and under my breath at the fickleness of fate) while watching.
I tend to stick more to the "My God, Vez, that was an awful pass..." kind of heckling...you don´t need swearing OR reference to personal problems to make a point.
Apart from anything, winding up the opposition cleanly and properly is an art-form which requires intelligence and a quick brain-anyone can make fun of people´s personal problems or swear...

Didn't think from this thread that he meant swearing at the players...just in general swearing when they gave away the puck or something along those lines.

Just to clarify I mean all times of swearing, including that refs chant from football where the word rhymes with banker. Whenever opposition fans start up a chant such as "Giants" instead of saying "Blaze" we would say a word beginning with s. If we were beating Basingstoke 7-0 "your s and you know you are." Etc etc etc.

I would like to be able to chant that kind of stuff as it would mean a better atmosphere and it would help attract the average man off the street to hockey. Unfortunatly though there are many people who wouldn't be mature enough not to take them sort of chants personally and that could lead to trouble. Just look at the fuss that got made and the offence that was caused when Theo Fleury visited the Sky Dome and received some mild banter.

If someone repeatedly swore in front of my daughter, I'd report them! If you want to 'f and blind' got somewhere else!

Oddly enough the language at the EPL play offs was far saltier than we are normally used to

Ha ha, the people who are worried about that would NEVER have survived up at Fife in the Heineken era (the BEER era!). At games over against Murrayfield you wouldn't walk across to the home side with your Flyers top on as you would get your butt kicked in! There were fights, spitting, missile throwing and non stop abusive chanting! Ahh, i miss the Murrayfield-Fife derbies! I didnt agree with the spitting however, to eb fair it was Durham fans more often than not. Most of Fife is still old school with the attitude of the fans, chants and hockey banter.

Part of the unique atmosphere at Fife stems from its history. Which would seem to indicate that the language used isn't anything other than routine as opposed to being deliberately offensive. Give me Fifes old barn for atmos anytime
