so in 3 out of 4 cases, a game or match penalty should be awarded then, so i was pretty much right. Its really left to the referees discretion and whether he feels it will benefit the game.

No, this is what you said Nope, in the superleague and the EIHL, checking from behind is a game misconduct every time. The aspect you had right is that a game or match penalty can be issued at the referees discreation if he felt the player made a deliberate attempt to injure the player or an injury occurred to the player due to the check. However, it is actually rare that a check from behind is given more than 2+10, I can't ever recall seeing a game or match penalty given.

Newham, the standard penalty for Checking from Behind or to the Head/Neck area is a 2 minute minor PLUS an 10 minute personal misconduct...
The refferee CAN if he chooses award a higher penatly, mainly a major + auto game misonduct, but the 'standard' penalty is 2+10.
EDIT: I've seen a couple of 5+GM's for it, but i'd say 95% of the time, it's called as 2+10. I've never seen a Match penalty for it. Maybe here in coventry, we don't feel the need to check from behind as much ;D

a game penalty means you are ejected from that game (the same as two 10 min misconduct penalties) and a match penalty is a one game suspension from the referee. All match penalties are however reviewed by the leagues disciplinary panel.
